The Hardest Part of Being an Agent

It’s not the piles and piles of queries.

MS piles

It’s not the people passing you manuscripts under the bathroom stall walls.

It’s not any of the things that you see a lot of agents posting about. Bad grammar. Poor spelling. Etc. We really do post that stuff to try to help authors have a better chance to make the cut.

The hardest part of being an agent is turning so many talented authors down. I mean, there are so many amazing stories, all of them different, all written by talented and unique people, all looking for a home.

I want to take them all on! Every one of them.

But there is only so much time in each day, and in order to represent the clients I have properly, I have to make sure I don’t overload myself. It’s hard though. Boy is it hard.

Kudos to all of you for sticking with writing against the odds. And thank you for sharing your manuscripts with me, even if it is hard to turn so many away.

Short post today. Must get back to reading all the fabulous stories!

  2. Yes, thank you for this; it makes being in the QUERY trenches that much easier.

The encouragement you give is very valuable. Don’t estimate the value in that. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for posting what is assumed (and hoped for), but rarely said by many agents.
